Fatal Fury Special was first published by SNK company for the Neo Geo game platform in 1993. Fatal Fury Special, the third game in the Fatal Fury series, can actually be defined as an improved version of Fatal Fury 2, which was published a year ago. In this special edition, there are 3 heroes from the first game of the series, 3 new heroes and a new endgame enemy are added to the game. The 8 heroes in Fatal Fury 2 are protected.

Fatal Fury Special also improves Fatal Fury 2 graphically. There are also some adjustments to the gameplay. Therefore, Fatal Fury Special has a higher game speed than Fatal Fury 2. A new combo system is also being added to the game.
