FileZilla is a free, fast and secure FTP, FTPS and SFTP client with cross-platform support (Windows, macOS and Linux).
What Is FileZilla, What Does It Do?
FileZilla is a free file transfer protocol (FTP) software tool that allows users to set up FTP servers or connect to other FTP servers to exchange files. In other words, a utility used to transfer files to or from a remote computer by the standard method known as FTP. FileZilla supports file transfer protocol over FTPS (Transport Layer Security). FileZilla client is an open source software that can be installed on Windows, Linux computers, macOS version is also available.
Why should you use FileZilla? FTP is the fast, easy and secure way to transfer files. You can use FTP to upload files to a web server or access files from a remote site, such as your home directory. You can use FTP to transfer files to or from your home computer as you cannot schedule your home directory from the remote site. FileZilla supports the secure file transfer protocol (SFTP).
Using FileZilla
Connecting to a server - The first thing to do is to connect to the server. You can use the quick connect bar to establish the connection. Enter the hostname in the Host field of the quick connect bar, the username in the Username field, and the password in the Password field. Leave the port field blank and click Quickconnect. (If your login specifies a protocol such as SFTP or FTPS, enter the hostname as sftp://hostname or ftps://hostname.) FileZilla will attempt to connect to the server. If successful, you will notice that the right column changes from not connected to any server to displaying a list of files and directories.
Navigation and window layout - The next step is to become familiar with FileZillas window layout. Below the toolbar and the quick link bar, the message log displays messages about the transfer and connection. The left column displays local files and directories i.e. items from the computer where you are using FileZilla. The right column displays the files and directories on the server you are connected to. Above both columns is a directory tree and below it is a detailed list of the contents of the currently selected directory. As with other file managers, you can easily navigate through any of the trees and lists by clicking around them. At the bottom of the window, the transfer queue, the files to be transferred and the already transferred files are listed.
File transfer - Now its time to upload files. First show the directory (like index.html and images/) containing the data to be loaded in the local pane. Now navigate to the desired target directory on the server using the file lists of the server pane. To load the data, select the relevant files/directories and drag them from the local to the remote pane. You will notice that the files will be added to the transfer queue at the bottom of the window, then removed again shortly. Because they have just been uploaded to the server. Uploaded files and directories are now displayed in the server content list on the right side of the window. (Instead of drag and drop, you can right-click the files/directories and select upload or double-click the file entry.) If you enable filtering and upload a full directory, only unfiltered files and directories in that directory will be transferred.Downloading files or completing directories basically works the same as uploading. On download you drag files/directories from remote bin to local bin. If you accidentally try to overwrite a file while uploading or downloading, FileZilla by default displays a window asking what to do (overwrite, rename, skip…).
Using the site manager - You need to add the server information to the site manager to make it easier to reconnect to the server. To do this, select Copy current connection to site manager… from the File menu. The site manager will open and a new entry will be created with all the pre-filled information. You will notice that the name of the entry is selected and highlighted. You can enter a descriptive name to be able to find your server again. E.g; You can enter something like domain.com FTP server. Then you can name it. Click OK to close the window. The next time you want to connect to the server, simply select the server in the site manager and click Connect.
