In the game, you take on the role of Zagreus, the prince of the Underworld, who tries to escape from the kingdom to get away from his ruthless father Hades and reach Mount Olympus. His quest is aided by other Olympians who grant him abilities to help fight the beings guarding the exit from the Underworld. He also assists him in his search for the villains of the Underworld, such as Sisyphus, Evridiki, Patroclus. The game features four biomes or locations of the underworld: Tartarus, Asphodel, Elysium, and the Temple of Styx.

You control Zagreus from an isometric point of view. You start the game by trying to pass through a series of rooms, the room layouts are predetermined, but the queues and the enemies you will encounter are determined randomly. There is a hack & slash battle system in the game. You have a primary weapon, a special attack, and a magic shot that you can use from a distance. The Olympians earn god taxes to choose from. For example; Lightning damage as Zeus… Showing the type of reward you can earn if you complete the next room or next room selection after clearing a room. The rewards are Olympian gifts, healing items, in-game currency, and in-store upgrades or keys that you can use to improve Zeus abilities.If your health drops to zero, you die and eventually face your father and lose all the gifts you received in the final fight.
