In fact, the tools secret lies in examining the quantization parameters used during compressions in the header of each JPEG file.

After uploading the photo to JPEGsnoop, the program will list all the information contained in the JPEG file. You can view which program it was played with from the Searching Compression Signatures at the end of the menu.

JPEGsnoop has a huge archive for many digital camera models. It is possible to add your own machine model here. After uploading a photo taken with your camera to the tool, click Add Camera/SW to DB. The tool can also inspect AVI files if they are in MJPEG format. For this you have to click File / Open Image and change File type to AVI. Then click Tools / Image Search FWD.
