Rule changes were made in 2002 to facilitate the phasing out of two-stroke 500ccs. The top class was named MotoGP, and manufacturers were given the choice of two-stroke engines of 500cc maximum or four-stroke engines of 990cc maximum. Manufacturers were also allowed to use their own engine configurations. The new four-stroke engines managed to beat the two-stroke engines, despite rising costs. As a result, there were no two-strokes left on the 2003 MotoGP grid. The 125cc and 250cc classes continued to use two-stroke engines.
