Obsidian Entertainment, which we know with many successful role-playing games it has developed to date, had to work with publishers due to various financial difficulties and could not convey its real thoughts to the games. Taking action after the rise of the fundraising platform called Kickstarter, Obisidian Entertainment promised a real role-playing game by asking players for support. Determined to bring back the old-school gameplay, the production studio came up with Pillars of Eternity.

Developed as the sequel to classic role-playing games such as Planescape: Torment, Baldurs Gate and Icewind Dale, Pillars Eternity managed to sell 4 million units. The first game, which takes place in the fantasy world of Eora and tells what happened in the Drywood nation, left the players in a real fantasy and explained the intricacies of role-playing. Underlining that they improved some mechanics in the sequel, Obsidian said that they came with a great game.
