Indie horror games have been on the rise for a long time. After productions such as Outlast and Amnesia, we have seen many small-scale horror games that contain sudden fearful moments, called jumpscare, and shaken with their atmosphere and stories, contrary to their graphics and gameplay mechanics. The Town of Light, released recently by an Italian studio, is a game that does not give this fear all of a sudden, but psychologically tenses the player with its storytelling and location taken from real events.

The biggest trump card of The Town of Light is that it deals with the Volterra Mental Hospital, which was established in Italy at the end of the 1800s. The developer team named LKA.it, which processes this ancient location as it is, included the treatments and experiences of a fictional character named Renée in Volterra in the game. In these years, the treatment methods applied in mental hospitals could be quite barbaric, sometimes even brutal. For this reason, many patients with psychological disorders were referred to perhaps much deeper disorders, while their lives were protracted in Volterra.

In terms of gameplay, The Town of Light is actually a walking simulation. There are objects you can interact with and stages you can call puzzles; however, the entire game usually takes place as Renée recalls her memories one by one in the hospital corridors and revisits the horrific events that have happened to her. The story of Renée, who visits the abandoned Volterra years after her terrible past, is disturbing, even contains scenes that you would not want to see towards the end of the game. Therefore, we can say that the game actually creates the psychological tension atmosphere it aims at.

However, The Town of Light is unfortunately insufficient for the players that the story cant catch, the players who expect more interaction and action. Still, thrillers can find the blood theyre looking for in this game, as its a first of its kind and has a few mechanics we havent seen before.

Although The Town of Light is an independent game, its graphics are quite advanced. For this reason, we recommend that you consider the following system requirements before purchasing the game:
