Your cars dashboard most likely has a speedometer, tachometer, fuel gauge, and coolant temperature gauge. However, your cars electronic brain actively monitors dozens of parameters in the background that benefit the driver. Android apps like Torque Free and Torque Pro put all this data at your fingertips.

Torque requires no more than the hardware you have on your Android phone to work. It can receive sensor data from your phones GPS, built-in compass, barometer and accelerometer without any external hardware. This data alone provides Torque Pro with enough information to calculate 0-60 and circumferential mile times and to export historical location records to Google Earth. However, it is not possible to take full advantage of the application without connecting to your cars OBD-II port.

Torque Pro brings real-time information, checking of fault codes, map display, test results and graphic information to the main screen. A large default indicator is also displayed on the main screen, which is either a tachometer or accelerometer, depending on the hardware available. The free version of the app takes you directly to the real-time information screen, you cannot use the other four functions.

The real-time information panel is the heart of the app. You can switch between seven screens where you can place as many virtual indicators as you want. Gauge types include dials, half-dials, bar displays, graphs and digital readouts. These gauges can be set to monitor one of the metrics provided by your phones sensors (GPS, compass, barometer) or a connected OBD-II monitor (engine speed, fuel flow rates, coolant temperatures, oil and intake air).

More data is shown in the real-time information panel in Torque Pro version. You can also view the calculated values (such as 0-60 time, trip distance, quarter mile time) obtained from the raw data available in the lite version. After entering vehicle-specific values for engine displacement, vehicle weight and fuel type into a vehicle profile, you can even have estimates calculated for fuel economy, horsepower, torque. If you have more than one vehicle, you can create multiple profiles and store separate records and dashboard layouts for each profile.

Pro version can map vehicle speed on Google Maps. Apart from the real-time information panel, there are other tracking functions as well. The map view feature displays a Google map with a color-coded record of your last few trips. Green represents low speeds, red represents high speeds. You can also choose to view G-forces and elevation records on this map. The check fault codes feature scans the vehicles diagnostic system and displays all available fault codes.
